Back to the mat…and other things

Today I did something that I haven’t done in a long time- yoga. Yoga is one of those things that when people ask me if I do it, I automatically say yes….and then when I stop and think about the last time I actually did yoga, I realize the lat time I stepped foot in a yoga studio there was snow on the ground.

So much has changed in my life in the last couple of months (new apartment in a new city with a new roommate and a new job), so it felt good to get back to something familiar. Getting back on the mat always feels like coming home to me.

At the same time, every time I come back after a brief (or lengthy) yoga hiatus, I always feel like a beginner. If anyone other than my cat had seen me this morning, they probably would have thought I didn’t know my downward dog from a whole in the ground. I was weak and wobbly. The new plush carpet in my bedroom didn’t help (solution). I could barely hold any pose for more than a few seconds. To sum it up, I was a hot mess. I’m pretty sure the cat hid under the bed out of fear that I would fall over and she’d be squished to death.

But the great thing is I know it gets better. I’ve been there, and I know how it feels to actually feel myself getting stronger and more stable. Yoga is one of the few things that I’ve actually stayed with long enough to see improvement. 

So now, I keep at it. I get back to the mat. Back to real life after some time away. Back to a routine after three weeks of what felt like chaos. Back to real, whole foods after entirely too much candy corn.

I’ve been blessed with the opportunity and time to pursue something I’m passionate about. I can’t wait to see what the next few months bring.

  1. Amy! I too did yoga yesterday for the first time in a long, long while. It definitely feels good and it’s amazing that (although wobbly) the basics feel a lot like riding a bike. I love hearing about your journey- you are very much an inspiration! Good luck getting back into the groove in your new city 🙂
